Love question for all ages

If you have ever watched the movie The Duchess... It is sad tale of love restricted by society's caste system. I can't even imagine living the life that the duchess lived. her life was so turbulent and relentless, I would kill myself.  

SO HERE'S THE QUESTION: when you date someone, do you go with your parent's judgement or your friend's? who's opinion is more important? friends like him but parents dont, or vice versa what do you do??
